On the eve of his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

The Spanish coach assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. Yet, that initial silverware remains his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“I can,” he stated in response to a query about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”

This weekend sees the landmark with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced just after his appointment was announced.

Present Challenges

With chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift even with Arteta managing a squad that has been plagued by over 100 injuries from the beginning of last season.

The manager is under a contract with a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver promptly.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, highlighting the ongoing need to prove his worth. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

Arteta continued, praising the strong backing from the hierarchy, while singling out the squad's dedication as most crucial. “Ultimately, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, hunger for knowledge and give the maximum to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the Everton match coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is likely to keep him out for the coming weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as proof they are close. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the level we are at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
