Hiker Attacked by Grizzly in Wilderness Area Transported to Trauma Center

A path in Yellowstone National Park remained blocked off on the following day after a possible brown bear charged at a hiker, leaving him with serious but not fatal injuries.

What Transpired

The 29-year-old man sustained injuries to his upper body and arm during the recent encounter on the remote hiking route near of a major natural landmark.

The individual came across the animal roughly 4 kilometers into the backcountry and activated deterrent spray as the animal began its attack, according to park officials.

Emergency responders escorted the victim. He was then transported to a medical station and later flown to a regional medical center.

Official Statements

Authorities stated they had no further information regarding the hiker's details, his hometown, or his recovery progress.

This marked the park’s first bear attack since a grizzly attacked a individual in the thermal area back in the previous decade. That hiker managed to exit on his own.

Brown bears are legally preserved as a threatened species in the continental United States, where their population has increased from around several hundred in the 1970s to approximately 2,000 today.

Bear Behavior and Identification

The predator involved in the Tuesday's event will not be relocated or eliminated because it responded during a surprise encounter and did not display unnatural behavior, as per park regulations.

DNA analysis may help determine the kind of bear. The victim believed it was a common bear, but its location, build, and behavior suggested it was a grizzly.

Larger bears and common bears can be challenging to distinguish at times. However, grizzlies grow significantly bigger – sometimes twice as big – and black bears typically have more uniform fur.

Wildlife officials stress the importance of carrying bear spray and being aware while hiking in wilderness areas.
