Mourinho is expected to replace the former coach, who was sacked following the midweek Champions League home defeat against Qarabag. Mourinho has only been out of work for less than a month after being dismissed by Fenerbahce. "The club formally asked me if I was interested. Which manager says no to such an opportunity? Certainly not I," Mourinho told the media after landing in the city. "When I was offered the opportunity to coach them, I jumped at the chance to say that I'm eager, that I'd like to." Mourinho began his managerial career with the club in the year 2000 but managed only 10 games and departed after a dispute with the club chairman. He then made his name with Porto between 2002 and 2004, winning six titles - including the Champions League in 2003-04. Since leaving his native country in 2004, Mourinho has managed the Blues, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, United, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and the Turkish club. He left the Istanbul side on 29 August, two days after they were knocked out from the Champions League play-offs by Benfica. Should Benfica appoint Mourinho, he would face the London club in the Champions League at their home ground on September 30.
